Long-awaited cafe opens at The Wrekin hill

Honeypot Cafe has been set up in the Wrekin car park by Shropshire Wildlife Trust as a new service and is serving up snacks and drinks to walkers who come from near and far to enjoy the hill views.

It has been placed at the site of the historic Forest Glen centre that was rebuilt at Blists Hill, in Ironbridge.

The catering team actually rolled up the windows and started trading at the site in The Ercall earlier this year, but have only now been able to hold the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Guests at the event included new Mayor of Telford & Wrekin, Councillor Stephen Reynolds; the new Mayor of Wellington, Councillor Denis Allen, who both cut the yellow ribbons.

Others included Mark Rowe and Emma Williams, of the Telford-based international consulting and technology firm Capgemini, and the chief executive of Shropshire Wildife Trust Colin Preston who gave a speech to mark the milestone.

The trust's mobile catering & visitors service officer Karen Wood says: "The opening ceremony went really well. We were really pleased that we managed to get the two mayors here as it's key to get the message out the the local community that the service is up and running. everyone was chuffed to bits.

"We started operating on Good Friday, but with a 'quiet opening'. We are very busy on weekends and bank holidays. |It's going really well."

A survey showed than more than 100,000 people climbed The Wrekin every year making it oner of the most popular activities in the area.

The catering van is open Thursdays to Sundays from 10am to 4pm.

The Wrekin landmark offers views of the surrounding countryside and can bee seen for miles around including from Walsall's Barr Beacon.
